1 Dorset Down
The name applied to the sheep originally reared in Dorsetshire. These are a strong and active type, yielding a 4-lb. or 5-lb. fleece of fairly long, fine wool of the Down type. The sheep have long spiral horns and are found in many parts of the United Kingdom. The staple is about 4-in. and spins 50's quality. -
2 Norfolk Down Wool
A short wool, but fine and soft. The strength and elasticity are not as good as the other short English wools. -
3 South Down Wool
This is the most valuable of the short staple 3-in. wools, and has a short regular fine fibre with a high spinning quality. Spins about 60's. The average weight of a fleece is about 41/2-lb. It is largely used for hosiery and flannels. The sheep were originally bred in the south-east of England (Sussex) but now are spread all over England. -
4 Suffolk Down
This sheep is one of the short-wool classes. Its black face is a striking characteristic. The fleece, which averages about 5-lb., consists of wool of good quality and fine fibre which is largely used in the hosiery trade. -
